If you’re preparing for the SAT Math section, you probably know the importance of mastering key SAT Math concepts, formulas, and problem-solving strategies. But what if I told you that one of the biggest obstacles to a higher SAT Math score isn’t your knowledge—but avoidable mistakes?

Many students lose points on SAT Math questions they could have answered correctly, simply because of minor errors, time mismanagement, or missing key details.

In this guide, I’ll break down the most common SAT Math mistakes and show you how to avoid them, so you can improve your SAT Math score, solve problems faster, and feel confident on test day.

1. Misreading the Question

One of the biggest SAT Math mistakes I see students making is rushing through the question and missing key details. The test writers love to include tricky phrasing to confuse students.

Example:

"If a car travels at a constant speed of 60 miles per hour for 90 minutes, how many miles does it travel per hour?"

Many students mistakenly answer 90 miles as they rush through the easier questions!

✅ Fix: Read the question carefully, underline key phrases, and make sure you understand what’s being asked before solving.

2. Forgetting to Convert Units

The SAT loves to mix units—feet vs. inches, minutes vs. hours, etc. A quick slip in unit conversion can cost valuable points.

Example:

"A rectangle has a width of 8 inches and a length of 2 feet. What is its area in square inches?"

✅ Fix: Always check units before calculating and convert everything to the same unit first.

3. Choosing the Wrong Answer Too Quickly

The SAT knows students often stop as soon as they find an answer that seems correct, even if it’s not the best choice.

Example:

A school's drama club is selling tickets for a play. Child tickets cost $5 each, and adult tickets cost $8 each. If the club made $152 from ticket sales and sold a total of 22 tickets, how many adult tickets were sold?

Many students quickly assume the number of adult tickets is 152 ÷ 8 = 19 and move on. However, this doesn’t account for the fact that both child and adult tickets contribute to the total.

✅ Fix: Before selecting an answer, double-check whether multiple solutions exist.

4. Not Using the Answers!

For algebraic equations, sometimes the fastest method is plugging in the answer choices instead of solving.

Example:

"If (3x – 5)/5 = 2, what is x? 3, 4, 5 or 6.

Instead of solving algebraically, try plugging in the answer choices to see which one makes the equation true.

✅ Fix: If solving algebra takes too long, use this method—especially for equations and word problems.

5. Ignoring “No Solution” or “Infinite Solutions” Cases

Some equations on the SAT have no solution or infinite solutions, but many students forget to check for these cases.

Example:

Solve for x:

2(x−3)=2x−6

Expanding gives:

2x−6=2x−6

Since both sides are identical, this means infinite solutions, not just one!

✅ Fix: If variables cancel out, check whether the equation is always true (infinite solutions) or false (no solution).

6. Spending Too Long on One Question

The SAT Math test is timed, and one of the worst mistakes students make is getting stuck on a tough question for too long.

✅ Fix:

• If you can’t solve it within 30 seconds, skip it and return later.

7. Not Using Desmos Effectively

With the SAT going digital, the Desmos graphing calculator is a powerful tool—but only if you know how to use it properly!

Key Desmos Strategies:

✅ Graph equations instead of solving algebraically✅ Check answer choices visually✅ Use tables to substitute values quickly
